Temperature is the most measured physical parameter in industry. Choosing the wrong sensor can mean the difference between ±0.1°C precision and ±5°C guesswork.
The Four Main Types
1. Thermocouples
Two dissimilar metals produce a micro-voltage proportional to temperature. Best for: extreme temperatures (-200°C to +1800°C). Weakness: lower accuracy (±1-2°C), needs cold junction compensation.
2. RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors)
Platinum element whose resistance changes predictably with temperature. Best for: precision measurement (±0.1°C). Weakness: higher cost, slower response.
3. Thermistors
Semiconductor-based sensors with high sensitivity over a limited range. Best for: consumer electronics, battery packs. Weakness: non-linear output, narrow range.
4. Semiconductor / IC Sensors
Integrated sensors like the TSL257 provide calibrated digital output. Best for: embedded systems, IoT devices. Weakness: limited temperature range.
