Capacitor Types Explained: MLCC, Tantalum, Electrolytic, and Film

Choosing the Right Capacitor

MLCC (Multi-Layer Ceramic)

Best for decoupling and filtering. Small, low cost, excellent high-frequency response. Voltage derating is critical.

Tantalum

Best for bulk capacitance in compact power designs. Higher density, stable vs voltage. Use 50% derating.

Electrolytic

Best for power supply bulk storage. Very high capacitance, limited lifespan, ESR increases with age.

Film Capacitors

Best for high-voltage and audio. Excellent stability, self-healing failure mode.
